Amid ongoing trade rumors, the 49ers' best move to make is to keep Mac Jones, and here's why.

Mac Jones has become one of the most discussed names in NFL trade circles, but the San Francisco 49ers should think long and hard before letting him go.

What began as a quiet offseason signing has evolved into one of the franchise’s most valuable under-the-radar moves, one that they should protect.

Jones arrived in March after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, signing a two-year, $7 million deal that barely made headlines at the time.

Initially, he was brought in simply to back up Brock Purdy, with no expectation of significant snaps. Yet the NFL rarely goes according to script, as this season, Jones has delivered the best stretch of football of his professional career.

5–3 as a starter, Jones’ resume includes a signature performance in the 49ers’ crucial win over the Los Angeles Rams. But his emergence goes far beyond wins and losses.

He has posted career-high marks in completion percentage and passer rating while operating behind a banged-up offense that has forced him to elevate rather than simply manage games.

The 49ers have long been known for grooming backup quarterbacks into legitimate starters elsewhere.

Still, Jones’ development feels different, more polished, resilient, and essential to San Francisco’s long-term stability.

What truly sets Jones apart this season is his toughness, which has enabled him to overcome his own injuries, demonstrating a willingness to play through pain that has earned him respect throughout the locker room.

He also understands the role he signed up for: support Purdy, stay ready, and execute when called upon. Few quarterbacks embrace that mindset as naturally as Jones, and even fewer thrive in it.

Given his production, demeanor, and affordability, trading him now would be a shortsighted move.

At $7 million over two years, Jones represents one of the league’s genuine bargains, especially on a team that regularly battles attrition at key positions.

Unless a desperate franchise is willing to part with a first- or second-round pick, the 49ers should shut down all trade conversations for their backup quarterback.

Jones himself remains focused on the present, emphasizing daily improvement and gratitude for the opportunity to help the red and gold win games.

His approach, combined with his performance, makes the answer obvious: San Francisco should do everything possible to keep him. Stability matters, depth matters, and Mac Jones has proven he can deliver both.

For the 49ers, the smartest move isn’t trading him, it’s holding on to him.
