Could Brian Kelly's dismissal at LSU, have an affect on Brent Venables' future at Oklahoma?

Reports emerged on Sunday that LSU Football head coach Brian Kelly was fired after a humiliating 49-25 home loss to Texas A&M.

Kelly’s buyout sat at $53 million, the second-highest buyout ever, only behind Jimbo Fisher who was paid $77 million by Texas A&M. The most expensive buyout so far this cycle came from Penn State with James Franklin, who will be paid close to $49 million.

After LSU suffered an embarrassing defeat, their third of the season, the Tiger fans made their voices heard loud and clear with the ‘Fire Kelly’ chants at Tiger Stadium on Saturday night.

According to OutKick, multiple sources on Sunday afternoon told the outlet that assistant coaches were worried about their future to the point of already reaching out to friends in the business for potential landing spots next season.

One source close to the program this morning also told OutKick, "I don't know how he comes back from this.”

It is worth noting that Kelly arrived at LSU the same year that Venables became the head coach in Norman. With pressure mounting on Kelly, it is fair to ask what this all means for Venables’ future, as he hasn’t sniffed the same amount of success that Kelly has had in Baton Rouge.

Both LSU and Oklahoma are proud programs that expect to compete for championships, and right now that standard is not being met at either institution. In four seasons, Kelly has compiled a 34-14 record with the Tigers, including an SEC Championship Game appearance in his first season. Kelly has also recorded two 10-win seasons in Baton Rouge.

By comparison, Venables has a 28-19 record at Oklahoma. Venables has just one 10-win season to his resume, which came in 2023 while the Sooners were still in the Big 12. He has also yet to make a conference championship game appearance.

If the Sooners were to move on from Venables, his buyout would be approximately $36.3 million, but it would drop to $34.9 million after the 2025 season. Prior to this season, Venables took a $1 million pay cut, after suffering his second losing season within the last three years.

Should Oklahoma move on from Venables, after LSU dismissed Kelly, it will set things up for an historic coaching carousel this cycle. Other Power Four jobs available right now include Penn State, Florida, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Arkansas, Stanford and UCLA. There is also potential for more top jobs to open up at Wisconsin, Auburn, Florida State, among others to come.
