Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy expects a shootout between the Sooners and Volunteers

ESPN College Football analyst Greg McElroy has seen the Sooners a few times this season. He most recently called Oklahoma’s 34-26 loss to Ole Miss this past Saturday on ABC, alongside Sean McDonough and Molly McGrath.

Outside of the broadcast booth, McElroy has become one of the most notable voices in all of College Football. His Always College Football podcast produced by Omaha Productions has become one of the most popular shows in the sport.

In the coming weeks, you’ll be hearing a lot more from McElroy as one of ESPN’s key figures in the College Football Playoff rankings reveal shows.

Although McElroy witnessed the Sooners suffer a stunning home defeat last week, the former Alabama quarterback believes that they will bounce back on the road this Saturday at Tennessee.

Throughout the season, McElroy has been very dismissive of the Volunteers. McElroy has less faith in the Volunteers than he does in the Sooners, and he talked about Oklahoma’s chances on his podcast this week stating, “I think this game’s got a chance to become a track meet.”

“I’m thinking it’s going to be a high scoring affair. I’m gonna take Oklahoma. I think they have fewer holes than Tennessee right now, and the injuries in Tennessee’s back end defensively really concern me. So even if the Oklahoma passing game has regressed, I think this could be the get right recipe if their offensive line can hold up and John Mateer can hit some big plays downfield.”

McElroy’s suggestion that the game could become a ‘track meet’ makes a ton of sense, especially when you consider that Tennessee’s defense has had their struggles. The Volunteers are currently ranked 113th in the FBS in points allowed, giving up 30.9 per game.

On top of the struggles statistically speaking for Tennessee, the Volunteers are also depleted on the injury front. Starting linebacker Arion Carter was out in last weekend’s game against Kentucky due to a turf toe. Meanwhile, starting cornerback Colton Hood suffered a calf injury against the Wildcats.

We won’t be hearing from McElroy, McDonough and McGrath on the call for this Saturday’s contest between Oklahoma and Tennessee. Instead the trio will be broadcasting Vanderbilt’s visit to Austin, to face Texas.

ESPN will be sending their top broadcast team of Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, and Holly Rowe to call the Oklahoma vs. Tennessee matchup from Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, on ABC’s Saturday Night Football at 6:30pm CT.
