“A little quieter now than before,” said Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin to Oklahoma defensive tackle David Stone in his postgame interview on ABC, after the Rebels 34-26 victory over the Sooners.
ABC sideline reporter Molly McGrath then asked Kiffin, “Oh are you talking a bit to Oklahoma’s players?”
Kiffin responded, “This guy (David Stone) yelled at me during the game like five times, (telling me) how great they were and we can’t score on ‘em.”
That exchange was a bizarre experience, that most people were caught off-guard by to see Kiffin singling out a 19-year old football player on the opposing team that he just beat. As Kiffin was making his comments to Stone, Oklahoma punter Grayson Miller pulled Stone away before he could say anything else to escalate the situation.
While Kiffin’s team got the final word, along with the last laugh, it was a day to forget for Stone. Stone was limited to just three tackles, along with two tackles for loss. 2025 has been a terrific season for Stone, a sophomore from Del City, but it was a bit of a struggle for Stone, and the Oklahoma defense against Kiffin’s Rebels offense.
Ole Miss racked up 431 yards of offense against the Sooners, and they also scored more points against Oklahoma (32), than any other team has done so far this season.
In his postgame news conference, Kiffin was asked about his exchange with Stone and explained more about the interaction that occurred between the two.
“That’s just me. He was (David Stone) talking the whole game to me, and I did a good job I felt of not talking back. He just kept telling me you ain’t gonna score and all this,” said Kiffin.
He added, “So, I didn’t go try to find him, he was just walking by, so I just saw him, so that’s just kinda me. Guy’s a great player man, ya know. I’m sure he’s really enjoyable to coach.”
While it was a disappointing loss, it was a big win for Kiffin and Ole Miss. Earlier this week, the Ole Miss head coach addressed rumors about moving on from Oxford to become the next head coach at Florida, publicly denying his interest.
Kiffin and the Rebels will look to keep up the momentum, as they square off against South Carolina next week. Meanwhile, Stone’s Sooners will be trying to get back on track when they travel to Knoxville next Saturday to face Tennessee.
