No. 1: Can John Mateer Regain His Early-Season Form?
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer started off the season red-hot, and was an early Heisman favorite. However, just over a month ago Mateer had surgery on his hand, and hasn’t looked the same since. Mateer struggled in the Sooners’ first loss of the season against Texas, throwing three interceptions. He followed up that performance throwing for a season-low of 150 passing yards in Oklahoma’s 26-7 win vs. South Carolina.
No. 2: Will Oklahoma’s Run Game Continue Its Surge?
Through the first five games of the season, the Sooners struggled to find much of a run-game outside of John Mateer. After a great showing against South Carolina, there is hope that Oklahoma’s rushing attack has turned a corner. True freshman Tory Blaylock had a strong showing against the Gamecocks, rushing for 101 yards off of 19 carries, with a touchdown score. Xavier Robinson is also coming off of a solid day with 58 rushing yards, off of 11 carries, and a rushing touchdown. The Sooners are hoping that they can effectively use their run game to a similar level like they did last week, as they ran the ball 40 times, for 171 rushing yards, along with 2 touchdowns on the ground.
No. 3: Can OU’s Elite Pass Rush Overwhelm Ole Miss’s O-Line?
The Sooners enter Saturday with No. 1 ranked team in the FBS in both sacks and tackles for loss. However, they face one of their toughest tests yet, going up against a Rebels’ offensive line that hasn't allowed a sack in two of its last three games. R Mason Thomas will be looking to build off of his 5.5 sack total, he is sitting at through the first six games, which ranks 15th in the FBS. OU’s defense dominated last week against South Carolina, with six total sacks. The week prior against a shaky Texas offensive line, the Sooners only managed to bring down Arch Manning once, with a single sack, as they suffered a brutal defeat. Which Sooners’ pass rush will ultimately show up?
Prediction: Sooners 27-24
Oklahoma has one of the best defenses we’ve seen in recent memory. They should be able to get enough stops and create turnovers to make life difficult on Lane Kiffin’s offense. Last week, John Mateer, along with the Sooners’ rushing attack, showed enough promise to believe that they can go toe-to-toe with the Rebel’s high-powered offensive attack.
