STILLWATER, Okla. - Former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy, spent 21 seasons as lead guy of the Cowboys. The former head coach is, without a doubt, the best Cowboys head coach of all time.
There are already statues of Boone Pickens and Barry Sanders outside of Boone Pickens Stadium. Gundy will surely receive his own statue in due time. Hell, he might even get the field named after him.
Once the season concludes, we’ll breakdown Gundy’s accomplishments and his record breaking career. I’ll give him his flowers and can’t wait for his eventual return to BPS, whether as an opposing coach or as a celebratory recognition ceremony. To be honest, I froth at the mouth thinking of the energy Boone Pickens Stadium would display if Gundy was to visit Stillwater as an opposing head coach. Can you even imagine that homecoming?!?
I’ll keep being honest. I called for Gundy’s head several times in the past 4 years. Coaches like Mike weren’t cut from the cloth where being savvy with NIL is in their repertoire. It showed in his attitude and in his words. Despite calling for Mike’s firing, I can still be appreciative, while being critical, of his coaching career.
With that being said, Weiberg and Oklahoma State really dropped the ball by not firing Gundy after the 2024 season.
Hindsight is obviously 20/20, but look at how the head coaching carousel has progressed this season. Look at firing Gundy before the new NCAA rule regarding the transfer portal and how prematurely firing Mike gutted this Oklahoma State roster. That’s on Weiberg, who coincidentally just got a new deal/extension.
If Oklahoma State fires Gundy, alongside Nardo and Dunn, post 52-0 in Boulder against Colorado, maybe this season has a different trajectory? The roster would have a better outlook, and the Cowboys begin the rebuild a season earlier.
The coaching carousel is one of the most volatile ones we’ve seen in a long while. Better jobs are opening that severely limit the candidates for Oklahoma State.
Gundy will get his flowers, but Weiberg and Oklahoma State will pay the debt of him not being fired in 2024.
