LUBBOCK, TEX - The 3:00PM CT kick for the Oklahoma State and Texas Tech game was delayed by 30 minutes due to a lighting delay. Lightning struck in Lubbock again on the ensuing kickoff as Texas Tech return man, J’Koby Williams, took the opening kick 99 yards to the house. The Texas Tech Red Raiders never looked back from that point on and dealt the Cowboys their 7th straight loss, winning 42-0.
Sam Jackson V started game and was replaced at halftime by quarterback Noah Walters, who was not on the roster to start the season. Will Hammond started the game for Tech looking to redeem last week’s loss to Arizona State. Hammond completed 9 out of 15 passes, for 102 yards, and one touchdown, to lead Texas Tech through the first half.
Tech forced a three and out on Oklahoma State’s first drive and blocked the ensuing Cowboys punt. Hammond then threw to Williams on the first play of their first drive for a 32-yard touchdown to go up 13-0 after Tech’s kicker, Upton Bellenfant, missed the second PAT.
Texas Tech’s Jacob Rodriguez got off to an early start, recording multiple tackles in the first half. Rodriguez ended with 10 total tackles, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery, and a complimentary defensive endzone visit. Oklahoma State showed more offensive movement in the 2nd quarter but ultimately could not produce any points. Texas Tech, however, did not show any signs of slowing down. Though, towards the beginning of the 2nd quarter, Oklahoma State forced a fumble on Tech QB, Will Hammond. Cowboys’ Taje McCoy stripped Hammond, for sure stopping Tech points in the red zone.
Oklahoma State could not come up with points off of McCoy’s forced fumble, though, Pokes punter, Wes Paul and the Pokes’ special teams were able to down the punt on the Tech 1 yard line. Oklahoma State special teams were the only bright spot today for the Cowboys. Texas Tech responded and managed a mid 2nd quarter fumble/strip and took it to the crib for 6 points. Jacob Rodriguez, who I previously mentioned in the game preview, came up big with the defensive touchdown.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders lead 28-0 at halftime. It didn’t get any better for the Cowboys post-halftime. The Jones-AT&T Stadium Tech crowd saw Behren Morton warming up after halftime, moving from street clothes to being suited up. However, instead of Morton, Mitch Griffis started the 3rd quarterback for the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech came out hot in 3rd quarter, as Oklahoma State attempted to continue their non-existent offensive attack. Griffis opened the 3rd quarter with a 42-yard scoring strike to make it 35-0 for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech capitalized towards the end of the 3rd quarter, completing an 8-play, 80-yard drive to make it 42-0. Oklahoma State and Texas Tech entered the 4th quarter looking to push the clock to 0:00.
Texas Tech used three quarterbacks in this game; Will Hammond, Mitch Griffis, and Holden Phillips. Oklahoma State also used multiple quarterbacks, giving both Sam Jackson V and Noah Walters chances behind center. Oklahoma State first string QB, Hauss Hejny, could see the start next week as the Pokes travel to Lawrence, Kansas to face the Kansas Jayhawks.
If he returns, it will be the first time he’s seen the field since Oklahoma State’s first game against UT Martin. Hejny left in the first quarter of the UT Martin game after suffering from a broken foot. Texas Tech was on top throughout the entire game, blanking Oklahoma State 42 – 0.
No tortillas were thrown and Oklahoma State didn’t score a single point, the first Texas Tech shutout against a Big 12 opponent since 2005.
Next for both teams: Oklahoma State travels to Lawrence, Kansas to face the Kansas Jayhawks. Texas Tech heads up to Manhattan, Kansas to battle the Kansas State Wildcats.
