The college football coaching carousel continues to spin and continues to grow. Since the last time I gave you my Oklahoma State Coaching Hot Board, LSU fired Brian Kelly and a few other coaches in the college football landscape have been officially put on the hotseat.
The 2025 coaching carousel, alongside what we’ve seen happen with the transfer portal, could have us witnessing the biggest mass “migration” in college football than we’ve ever seen! I would almost liken it to an electric NBA Free Agency, where instead of working your day job, you’re constantly hitting F5 refresh on your computer or have your fingertips on X, waiting for the inevitable Shams Bomb. Yes, it’s that crazy and, no, it’s not a hyperbole.
With seats getting hotter, coaches cleaning out their offices, and the rumor mill churning, let’s update the Oklahoma State Coaching Hot Board.
#1: Zac Robinson, former Oklahoma State QB and current Atlanta Falcons Offensive Coordinator –
Yes, I still have Zac Robinson as number one on my Oklahoma State Hot Board. Why? As I detailed in my Making The Case for Oklahoma State’s Next Head Ball Coach article, Zac Robinson hasn’t lost any traction. Despite the Atlanta Falcons offense being middle of the pack at best and the scoring offense being bottom of the barrel, Robinson still has his Oklahoma State resume to fall back on. Robinson hasn’t been legitimately rumored, as of yet, to have interest from any other Power 4 school and he might be looking for another job soon, as the Atlanta Falcons don’t seem to be making a push for the playoffs or to win the worst division in NFL football.
Is Zac Robinson a safe play for Oklahoma State? I’m not quite sure. To foreshadow, I’ll further address if Oklahoma State can really have their choice of the available candidates in a later OP. With how the coaching carousel is going, Oklahoma State is far more of a beggar than a chooser, and, damn, I hate to say that.
#2: Collin Klein, former Kansas State QB and current Texas A&M Offensive Coordinator –
Texas A&M Offensive Coordinator, Collin Klein, is no stranger in Stillwater or in Boone Pickens Stadium. 36-year-old, Collin Klein, is a legend in Manhattan, Kansas and played under one of the greatest, and nicest, college football coaches we’ve ever seen, in Coach Bill Snyder. In his four years at Kansas State, Klein only managed to beat Mike Gundy and the Cowboys once, in 2012, throwing for 245 yards and rushing for 64 yards and a touchdown, winning in Manhattan, 44-30. Though it was not the 2012 game that cemented Klein’s prowess in Cowboys fan minds, it was the “Earthquake Game”, in 2011, in Boone Pickens Stadium. Klein threw for 231 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 144 yards and three touchdowns, taking Oklahoma State to the brink of defeat, but failing in the final seconds, inside the Oklahoma State 10-yard line, as time expired. It remains potentially the best college football game I’ve ever been in attendance for. And it’s a partial reason why he is #2 on my updated Oklahoma State Coaching Hot Board.
Klein currently has, the number three nationally ranked, Texas A&M Aggies as the nation’s 16th best offense, in terms of yards, in the FBS. In the SEC, where high-powered offenses are hard to come by, Klein’s Aggie offensive juggernaut just means more. Can Oklahoma State convince this once Purple Cat to transition into a home-run orange Maine Coon and come to Stilly?
#3: GJ Kinne – former Tulsa Golden Hurricane and current Texas State Head Coach
Listen, I’ve not been shy on my thoughts and feelings for Texas State coach, GJ Kinne. I remember Texas State taking the Arizona State Sun Devils to the brink in 2024 and I’ve spent my fair share of time in San Marcos, Texas. I’ve compared Kinne to the likes of Los Angeles Rams coach, Sean McVay and still believe he’s the best pick for Oklahoma State’s next head coach. He’s got the fire the Cowboys need, he’s lived on Tulsa Time, he’s got something to prove, and he’s led the Texas State Bobcats to back-to-back 8-win seasons. The only reason he’s moved down on my board is because of the swirling rumor mill around Oklahoma State and Klein in the past day and a half.
#4: Eric Morris – Current North Texas Head Coach
North Texas Eric Morris wasn’t on my initial Oklahoma State Coaching Hot Board, though he could’ve and should’ve been an honorary mention. Morris has the Mean Green sporting a 7-1 record this season, only losing to Alex Golesh’s USF team, who is currently ranked 24th in the nation. Will Eric Morris be the head coach of Oklahoma State next season? Possibly. But if not at Oklahoma State, a Power 4 team will likely pay that man. North Texas battles a 7-0 Navy team this week, a game in which a lot of folks thought Herbstreit and College Gameday should’ve attended over Cincinnati at Utah.
#5: Alex Golesh – Current University of South Florida Head Coach
USF Head Coach, Alex Golesh remains on my Oklahoma State Coaching Hot Board. USF is on a bye week this week, but coach, Alex Golesh, has the Bulls ranked 24th in the nation and sporting a 6-2 record. Golesh, while rumor milled to be linked with Oklahoma State, is not higher on my board, simply because I think a better job will offer him. The Florida Gators are currently looking for a coach. The Auburn Tigers may soon be looking for a new coach. I don’t believe those types of teams will let Golesh travel as far west as Stillwater. Though, if they do, I would gladly welcome Alex Golesh as the next Oklahoma State Head Coach.
