With the Los Angeles Angels entering buyout talks with third baseman Anthony Rendon, it’s finally time to find a long-term player to fill in the hole that’s been in Anaheim’s hot corner for several years now.
With a good amount of third base talent on the market this free agency, the Angels will certainly be a team that brings in one of the position’s top available talents this winter. Here are three realistic options for the Halos to pursue this offseason:
Suarez spent last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Seattle Mariners after a midseason trade and enjoyed one of his best seasons at the plate in the last six years. The 34-year-old sent 49 balls over the outfield fence last season while bringing in a career high 118 runs. His .824 OPS in 2025 was his best since before the turn of the decade. While he’s a little bit older than they’d prefer, Suarez’s bat would slide perfectly into the Angels’ lineup.
Coming over from the Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball, Murakami is one of the most interesting players on the market this winter. At just 25 years old, Murakami could provide the Angels with a true long-term solution at third base. He hit 24 home runs in just 69 games last season in NPB, recording a slash line of .286/.392/.659 with an OPS of 1.051.
There are questions to be asked about his high strikeout rate and struggles against fastballs, but Murakami’s slugging abilities are drawing loads of interest. The Angels could find themselves with their next Japanese star after the departure of Shohei Ohtani a few seasons ago.
Moncada actually spent last season with the Halos, making 76 appearances at third base. The 30-year-old enjoyed a great season from the plate, recording his highest OPS (.783) since 2021. The problems come with Moncada’s health, in which he dealt with multiple injuries last season that kept him out of the lineup, and left the Angels scrambling for a replacement. If they were to resign the 10-year veteran, the Halos would be risking putting themselves in another bad situation of missed games from their starting third baseman.
There are other third baseman names such as Luis Urias, Paul DeJong, and Alex Bregman hitting the market this winter, but Suarez, Murakami, and Moncada seem likely options for the Angels after the Rendon buyout news. Fans can only hope for availability, something that plagued Rendon’s Angels tenure and had detrimental consequences for the club.
