According to a new report from Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Toronto Blue Jays might be interested in free agent infielder Jorge Polanco, especially if they lose Bo Bichette in free agency.
Rosenthal wrote this on Tuesday in relation to the Seattle Mariners, including the Jays note at the end.
Polanco, 32, still would fit nicely, serving mostly as a designated hitter to protect his health but also playing second on days the Mariners want to use Cal Raleigh at DH. But Polanco, according to major-league sources, wants to play out the market. The Boston Red Sox might want him if they lose third baseman Alex Bregman, the Toronto Blue Jays might if they lose Bo Bichette. And those are just two possibilities.
A 12-year veteran of the Minnesota Twins and Mariners, Polanco is now 32 years old. He'll turn 33 in July of 2026. A lifetime .263 hitter, he is coming off an excellent season in which he hit .265 with 26 home runs and 78 RBIs for Seattle.
He carried a .326 on-base percentage this season, and he came up clutch in the playoffs, hitting two home runs off Tarik Skubal in the American League Division Series and providing five RBIs against the Jays in the ALCS.
Well, if the Blue Jays lose Bichette, they are going to need a middle infielder. Andres Gimenez could slide over to shortstop permanently, which opens up second base for Polanco. It's a nice clean fit in that regard.
Furthermore, given his age, Polanco shouldn't cost a lot of money. Most predictions have him at 2-3 years worth $25-40 million. For a Jays team that has spent big money over the last several years, that kind of signing is surely appealing.
Polanco isn't seen as an everyday second baseman. After a knee injury hindered him in 2024, the M's played him at DH most of the season in 2025. He started just 34 games at second base in the regular season and five at third base. And while he played second in the playoffs, they clearly wanted to limit his yearly exposure there.
Since one of George Springer and Anthony Santander needs to play in the DH spot, can the Jays really count on Polanco at second all year?
And if the Jays sign Kyle Tucker? That would force Addison Barger to the infield, which could force Ernie Clement to second, which means no room for Polanco anyways.
