Bo Nix had a fantastic rookie season for the Denver Broncos last season, as he helped lead the team to the playoffs. He finished the season with 3,775 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
With that type of success in year one, there were big expectations for Nix and the team entering 2025. Many pundits across the league had this as a dark-horse in the AFC, and the top threat to the Kansas Ciy Chiefs in the AFC West.t
After the 23-20 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3, the Broncos are now 1-2 and it is the Chargers that look like the top team in the AFC West. Nix really struggled in this game, going 14-of-25 for 153 yards. While it is still early, there is a lot of panic in Denver that maybe last year was an aberration and that he isn't a franchise quarterback.
NFL.com writer Kevin Patra says it isn't all bad yet for Nix, as he really struggled at the start of last season as well.
Here are his thoughts on Nix:
"The positive: Nix looked much worse to start his rookie campaign and was able to turn things around, finishing strong and helping the Broncos reach their first postseason in eight years," Patra wrote in his column. "If the Broncos cut out the avoidable penalties, start becoming more efficient on early downs and move the chains, Nix’s production will pick up. Hitting those splash plays he’s missed will then become a bonus. Payton has earned the benefit of the doubt that he can turn around his young QB’s play as the season wears on."
One area where the Broncos have been very bad is on third downs, as they are 12-of-37 in three games. They aren't doing the work early in the drive, and they are being forced into third and longs.
Now, Nix isn't playing his best and the team is 1-2, but the Broncos are very close to being 3-0. Both of their losses are on the road, and they lost on last second field goals.
Up next for Nix is the Cincinnati Bengals, and he will be on a big stage on Monday Night Football. The Bengals have one of the worst defenses in the NFL. If Nix once again struggles in this game, then there could be more room for concern moving forward.
However, how NFL teams are treating the preseason, September is being used as more of the figure it out process. Nix got things going in his rookie year, and there is no reason to think he can't do it again.
