Ex-Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has been benched just three weeks into his tenure with the New York Giants, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Wilson, who signed with the Giants on a one-year deal this offseason, had highs and lows in his first three games with New York. His Week 2 performance against the division rival Dallas Cowboys instilled hope for Giants fans, as he threw for 450 yards and three touchdowns.
That hope was immediately revoked after Wilson managed just 160 passing yards while throwing two interceptions against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night. In his three starts, Wilson led the team to a 0-3 start for the 2025 season.
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart will now step into the starting role for the Giants. The 22-year-old was selected out of Ole Miss with New York’s 25th overall pick.
Before a season-long stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, Wilson was the quarterback for the Broncos for two seasons, from 2022 to 2023. The Broncos franchise put all its faith into Wilson, trading two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a fifth-round pick, as well as three players. Wilson signed a five-year, $245 million extension with the Broncos after arriving.
The trade package made it clear what Denver was expecting from Wilson. They looked at Wilson as their ticket to make a real playoff push, but his time in Denver didn’t go according to plan.
Wilson led the Broncos to a 4-11 record in 2022 in his 15 starts for Denver. He threw for just 16 touchdowns in his first season in a Broncos uniform, a stark difference from what the franchise and fans expected from their new quarterback, whom they traded vital draft assets away for.
2023 wasn’t the bounce-back year needed from Wilson, as he barely managed over 3,000 passing yards in 15 starts. He led the Broncos to a 7-8 record in those 15 starts. Wilson was then benched at the end of the season and later released in the offseason.
It was in Denver where Wilson’s decline started to take effect, and despite bouncing around, he still hasn’t been able to solidify himself as a starting-caliber quarterback. Now, Wilson will sit behind a rookie quarterback as the Giants look to spark a shift in their season.
