The Kansas City Chiefs offense is starting to resemble the Chiefs of old, as Patrick Mahomes threw for 257 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 30-17 victory against the Detroit Lions on Sunday night.
Since Xavier Worthy came back from injury, the offense has looked like the Chiefs offense early in Mahomes career. The explosive plays are coming back to the offense, and there is only more good news coming as star wide receiver Rashee Rice is officially not suspended anymore and will be able to play next week.
While Worthy has helped spark the passing game for the Chiefs, he has also impacted the rushing attack in a big way as well.
During the stretch of three games that Worthy has been back for, the Chiefs have averaged 129.3 rushing yards. Opposing defenses have to fear the ability of the Chiefs to get big plays through the vertical passing game. With that, they are having to keep an extra guy deep, and this is allowing the Chiefs to have the numbers advantage on the line of scrimmage.
Another big thing developing is the fact that Isiah Pacheco is starting to resemble the explosive running back Chiefs fans got used to early in his career. Last season, he fractured his fibula in the second game of the year. He had surgery, and came back after missing nine games.
While he was back and playing, he wasn't fully back the player he was pre-injury. In the first two games of the season, he averaged 3.2 yards per carry.
In the last four games, he is averaging 4.6 yards, and is hitting the holes at a much faster clip.
For the Chiefs, a lot of the issues this year have been self-inflicted with penalties or turnovers. When they are able to go out and play clean football, this offense has been very efficient at moving the ball down the field.
After last weekend's frustrating loss to the Jaguars, this must a much-needed win. They stay only a game behind both the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers, while giving themselves a chance to contender for the No. 1 seed in the AFC. A loss to the Lions would have put them in a major hole in both of those races.
The Chiefs offense has been playing much better recently, and with the best player coming back next week, it could be the Chiefs of old moving forward.
