The Kansas City Chiefs are confusing at times, especially around the trade deadline.

Currently sitting at 5-4, the Chiefs haven’t had the dominant season that people expect year-in and year-out, so it was quite the shock that Kansas City didn’t make any moves at the deadline this season.

There are two clear holes on this team, one on the offensive side and one on the defensive side: running back and defensive tackle.

When healthy, the running game revolves around Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt, Patrick Mahomes and a sprinkle of Brashard Smith. Pacheco is injured, leaving a hole at the RB1 spot.

The rumor was that the Chiefs had interest in New York Jets running back Breece Hall, the amazing dual-threat running back who wants out of New York.

The asking price was a third-round pick, nothing absurd, especially for a player as talented as Hall. He will need a new contract after this season, but so what? If the Chiefs don’t want to re-sign him, they can move on after he leads them to the Super Bowl. Yes, the Super Bowl, because that’s where I imagine the Chiefs would be headed had they made the trade.

Instead, the Chiefs were comfortable with trading a fourth-rounder but not a third. This is a great example of penny-pinching, because the chances that their eventual third-round selection will equate to the value of Hall are slim.

The biggest gripe I have with this is that the team was on board with trading a third-round pick and a sixth-rounder for receiver Kadarius Toney a few seasons ago. They were willing to part ways with that return for Toney, who has never amounted to anything Hall has done in his career, but not less for Hall.

“Hall would have been an exciting addition to many offenses, but most especially the Chiefs, who need better play from the running back position desperately,” ESPN’s Ben Solak wrote Tuesday. “Instead, he'll grind away his 4 yards per carry in New York.”

Kansas City should’ve addressed the need at DT as well, as the front seven haven’t gotten much pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

But it’s really just mind boggling that the Chiefs were too stubborn to move a third-rounder for Hall, who is currently 12th in rushing yards (581) and has accumulated almost 3,000 rushing yards in his three-and-a-half-year career. His pass-catching ability paired with the magician Mahomes made too much sense, apparently.
