The Kansas City Chiefs have figured out who they are and have won five of their last six games.

The offense has been firing on all cylinders, and it’s highlighted by the best quarterback in the National Football League: Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes may be well on his way to another Most Valuable Player award. The two-time MVP has completed 67 percent of his passes for 2,099 yards with 17 touchdowns and four interceptions as well as 280 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 46 carries. He is on pace to record 4,460 yards with 36 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Mahomes has taken over games with his scrambling and rushing ability just like he always has, but the rushing effectiveness has been a bigger contribution than it has in the past.

With the receiving corps at full strength with Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy, and the offensive line stepping up the last few weeks, the Chiefs’ biggest concerns fall with the defensive line.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell believes the offense won’t get an upgrade, but the defensive line is in need of one.

“The offense appears to be set after the returns of Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice, leaving Veach to focus on the defensive side of the ball,” Barnwell wrote Thursday. “Along the D-line, Felix Anudike-Uzomah and rookie second-rounder Omarr Norman-Lott are both out for the season, costing the Chiefs two players who were expected to be part of their rotation up front. Veach has gotten useful work here at the bottom of the lineup from players he has added during the season in the past, including Terrell Suggs in 2019 and Mike Pennel in 2023, though those were both signings as opposed to trades. I think the Chiefs could add at least one lineman between now and the start of the postseason.”

Although defense is the top priority, I still expect the Chiefs to monitor running backs across the league like Breece Hall of the New York Jets.

Starting running back Isiah Pacheco is dealing with an MCL injury and is expected to miss Kansas City’s Week 9 matchup with the Buffalo Bills, and even when he was healthy, he wasn’t adding much of an impact for much of the season.

Adding a star dual-threat running back like Hall would make this offense unstoppable. With the Jets sitting at 1-7, they are likely to sell off pieces on expiring contracts, like Hall.

The trade deadline is Nov. 4.
