The Kansas City Chiefs are 2-3 on the season after losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 31-28, in embarrassing fashion.
If you look at the box score, the question would be 'how did they lose this game?'
The Chiefs out-gained the Jaguars 476-319. They averaged 7.6 yards per play, and won the turnover battle. The one glaring issue was the Chiefs had 13 penalties for 109 yards, while the Jaguars had only four for 25 yards.
Mistakes have been hurting the team all year, and the biggest issue is many of these mistakes have been made by the Chiefs best players.
In Week 1, Kelce doesn't get where he needs to on the field, and he ran into Xavier Worthy, making him miss basically three games. Chris Jones in that game loses contain late, allowing Justin Herbert to run for a clinching first down.
Against the Eagles the following week, Kelce drops a go-ahead touchdown that turns into an Eagles drop.
On Monday night, Harrison Butker continued his terrible 2025 season. Through five games, he has already missed five kicks, but now his issues have lingered to kickoffs.
The Chiefs took the lead with under two minutes, and then the kicker proceeded to kick the ball out of bounds, giving the Jaguars the ball at the 40-yard line to start that final drive.
Final play of the Jaguars drive, Jones is seen just standing on the field and not chasing after Lawrence after the quarterback tripped over his offensive lineman's foot.
The one leader on the team who hadn't made a big mistake was Patrick Mahomes, but he threw a 99-yard interception to Devin Lloyd as the Chiefs were going to take the lead back.
The Chiefs during this run as a dynasty have done a phenomenal job of not beating themselves. Even when they lost games, it was because the other team went out and made a ton of big plays. The loss to the Jaguars was a meltdown by the Chiefs.
This is the time when the locker room needs its leaders to step up. They need to hold themselves accountable, as well as each other. The best players can't be dropping passes, missing kicks and not competing on the field anymore.
While the team isn't playing its best football, this team is more than capable of winning the AFC once again. The offense has a chance to be one of the most dynamic after it gets Rashee Rice back after next week's game. Regardless, nothing will completely change for the Chiefs until the leaders step up.
