Now that he’s back on the field, consider Kansas City Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy something of a jealous guy. He wants what tight end Travis Kelce has with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, which is the ability to make plays via adjustments without having to say a single word.

Worthy said as much during an interview with Rich Eisen that appeared on ESPN. Eisen asked the receiver if he had any Patrick Mahomes stories, and Worthy responded by describing a play that opened his eyes to what was possible with the quarterback.

“It was a play they had, and Trav, he has a little bit of freedom, it’s kind of a route where he goes in and comes back out, and Pat threw it before he even turned around.,” Worthy said. “All Travis did was turn around and stick his hands out, and the ball hit him in the hands. It just shows the greatness between them two and the chemistry.”

It’s not quite the same for Worthy, of course. He’s a second-year receiver, and he plays a different position. The plays that will produce that kind of chemistry with Mahomes will happen on bubble screens and motion plays designed to get the speedy receiver out into space.

If Worthy does develop that level of chemistry, though, other plays could easily become  touchdowns. Now that the receiver has established himself as an essential part of the Chiefs offense, it’s easy to see Worthy raising his hand while beating a defender during a go route, for instance, after which Mahomes drops the ball in the bucket.

Back-shoulder throws are another intriguing possibility. At first glance, Worthy is too small at 5’10” to make those work at a high level, but when you consider his speed and the ability to stop on a dime that he brings to table, those could easily become big plays, too.

Worthy also knows that the Chiefs need that chemistry now, not down the line in a year or two. Kelce is still a productive player, but we've already seen that he’s not quite as reliable as he used to be, and Worthy will be expected to pick up the slack starting on Monday night in Jacksonville.

“Pat’s one of the greatest, on pace to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time,” Worthy added. “Just having that, and having the ability to play with him, it’ just a blessing.”
