Penalties plagued Jawaan Taylor, but this $80 million lineman is fighting back, reclaiming his elite pass-blocking prowess and silencing critics.

The 2025 season has included many ups and downs for the Kansas City Chiefs, and that’s no different on an individual level with offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor. Taylor was even labeled as the team’s most disappointing player in 2025 by Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report in a recent article.

Taylor joined Kansas City ahead of the 2023 season after four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, signing a four-year, $80 million deal with the Chiefs. He was previously an early second-round selection by Jacksonville out of the University of Florida in 2019.

The start of 2025 was brutal for Taylor, racking up penalty after penalty. He remains the most penalized offensive lineman in football this season with eight penalties. It’s been a consistent problem for Taylor. Since joining Kansas City, Taylor has amassed 43 penalties. With the lack of offensive weapons, the Chiefs had to start the season due to injuries and suspensions. The constant penalties from Taylor were even more impactful during that time. To make matters worse, among qualified offensive tackles, Taylor ranks 48th of 58 linemen in PFF grade.

Luckily, Taylor has begun to turn it around in recent weeks. For four consecutive games, Taylor has not been penalized. He’s also been the best blocker for the Chiefs in the passing game, recording a 93% pass block win rate.

Taylor has had his fair share of badly-timed penalties that have completely halted a few Chiefs drives this season, but he has shown improvement as the season has moved along.

The Chiefs can only hope that Taylor continues to find his groove and carry his momentum into the rest of the season. Sitting at 4-3 and third in the AFC West standings, Kansas City needs every boost it can get, and despite a slow start, Taylor has shown his $80 million worth.
