Jones hints at potential reinforcements, balancing competitiveness with cautious optimism as the Cowboys eye trade deadline opportunities.

The Dallas Cowboys have some momentum following their 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders as they turn their attention to the Week 8 showdown with the Denver Broncos.

As important as this matchup is, many fans have also turned some of their attention towards the Nov. 4 trade deadline and what potential moves, if any, the team could make before the deadline passes. It would seem that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has had the same thoughts.

As said during his interview with 105.3 The Fan and reported on by Todd Archer of ESPN, Jerry believes that this team is at least competitive enough to look at adding players.

While that quote may come across as milquetoast hem-hawing, it’s likely the best way that Jerry can hedge his bets. If he said something along the lines of his infamous “all in line,” then nothing short of a splash acquisition at the level of Maxx Crosby would satiate the fan base.

But if he were to say something closer to, “I like our team and think the injury returns will be a sufficient boost” than AT&T Stadium might look more like a castle siege than a football game during the Cowboys next home game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9.

So, we get a quote like the one Jerry gave in that interview: saying that yes, we think our team is competitive, and we’ll look for upgrades, but no promises. Realistically, he can’t say more than that.

While this is simply speculation, it wouldn’t shock me if the Dallas front office is waiting until the results of the Broncos game to definitively decide which path they’re going to follow. It’s much easier to add to a 4-3-1 team coming off back-to-back wins and winning three out of four games than it is to a 3-4-1 team that has alternated wins against below .500 teams and losses to teams with winning records.

For all the criticism that Jones has rightfully received, the above plan is likely the best course of action for the Cowboys. Long accused of being impetuous and impulsive, being patient with such an important decision would be welcomed progress.

But, if Dallas can beat Denver and be at 4-3-1 heading into a Week 9 matchup against a struggling Arizona Cardinals team, then that patience should result in some sort of addition, a thought that seemed inconceivable only a short time ago.
