During a recent episode of the Where It Happens podcast, Reddit cofounder and venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian states that in five years “90% of people will not play a game unless they are being properly valued for that time.”

Ohanian goes on to explain that players will begin to place greater importance on their time and spend it playing games where they actively earn value and reap rewards. He elaborates by saying that many popular games played today generate large amounts of capital by pushing advertisements on users, or selling them digital, non-tangible items.

Play-to-earn games infuse blockchain technology and cryptocurrency into video games, often using the crypto as a form of ingame exchange or currency. Besides play-to-earn games, Ohanian also predicts that many people will become involved in decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) within the next five years. A DAO is a group of individuals who come together (usually through the internet) to achieve or pursue a common goal/interest.

Ohanian goes on to claim that in the near future, people will associate with and care more for their online identity than real-life, stating in the podcast episode, “they’ll care more about some pseudonym they made up than their government name.”
