Who will the Philadelphia Eagles get to replace Za'Darius Smith?

The Philadelphia Eagles lost both Josh Sweat and Milton Williams during the offseason, and they didn't really do anything to replace either in free agency or in the NFL Draft. Instead, the Eagles made a last-minute signing of Za'Darius Smith, which actually came after their season opener.

Smith registered 35 tackles and nine sacks last year, so it seemed like a good move for Philadelphia, right? Well, it didn't turn out that way, as the 33-year-old abruptly announced his retirement following the Eagles' Week 6 loss to the New York Giants.

Where does Philadelphia turn now? Philly has logged just nine sacks thus far, which is unacceptable for a Super Bowl contender.

Well, Mike Jones of The Athletic envisions a potential solution for the Eagles: Miami Dolphins edge rusher Jaelan Phillips.

Jones listed Phillips among 10 players to watch heading into the trade deadline, and he tabbed Philadelphia as a potential landing spot for the 26-year-old.

"He hasn’t played a full season since 2022, but when healthy, the former first-round pick is highly impactful as a pass rusher," Jones wrote. "A number of top teams — 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs, to name a few — find themselves in need of edge-rushing help."

Phillips has logged 17 tackles and a sack thus far this season.

The University of Miami product entered the NFL in 2021 and got off to a terrific start, registering 42 tackles and 8.5 sacks during his rookie campaign. He followed that up by posting 61 tackles and seven sacks in Year 2, and in 2023, Phillips was on pace for a terrific season, having totaled 43 stops and 6.5 sacks before a torn Achilles ended his year after eight games.

Phillips returned to the field in 2024, but played in just four contests as a result of a season-ending ACL tear.

So, yes: Phillips has an extensive injury history, and it could scare teams away from acquiring him. But Phillips is also in the final year of his contract, so the Eagles would have no financial obligation to him beyond this season if things don't work out.

Plus, given Phillips' lack of durability and the fact that he is slated to hit free agency, the Dolphins' asking price probably won't be all that high, making the Redlands, Ca. native a great gamble for a sack-needy team like Philadelphia.
