Shooting Suspect Sets Own Home on Fire After Fatally Shooting LA County Firefighter and Wounding Fire Captain
Agua Dulce: After fatally shooting a firefighter, and wounding a fire captain at Los Angeles County Fire Station 81 on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, the shooting suspect barricaded himself inside his home, and set the home on fire. An individual that was found is believed to be the suspect, deceased at the home location.
The shooting occurred on the 8700 block of Sierra Highway at around 10:55 a.m. An off-duty colleague of the fire station fatally shot a 44-year-old male firefighter specialist who was with the department for about 20 years. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an update by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The 54-year-old fire captain sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to Henry Mayo Hospital where he remains in critical, but stable condition after surgery, according to LACoFD.
According to information from the press conference held Tuesday afternoon, the Special Enforcement Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded and contained the location of the fire. While containing the location, they saw an individual in a small pool outside of the actual residence appeared to be suffering a gunshot wound to the head. At this time, it is not known whether the wound was self inflicted or not, but no deputies fired, and it's believed no one else was at the location.The Sheriff's Homicide Bureau stated they can't say with 100% certainty that it's the shooter until an approach of the residence is made. At the time of the press conference, the house was still burning.

LACoFD Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby at the press conference confirmed the shooter was a firefighter specialist engineer and was not scheduled to work on Tuesday. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
