The Detroit Lions rebounded in emphatic fashion Sunday, defeating the Washington Commanders 44-22 in a dominant road showing that put last week’s disappointment behind them. A notable figure in attendance was President Donald Trump, adding to the spectacle.
From the start, Detroit’s offense looked as sharp as ever, rolling through Washington’s defense with precision and power. The Lions scored on their first eight possessions and amassed 546 total yards, converting 30 first downs in the process.
Head coach Dan Campbell attributed the resurgence to a new mindset and some strategic changes. “It was just, let’s try something a little different,” he said when asked about play-calling. Campbell clarified that the change was collaborative: “I get thoughts from John Morton and all the other coaches as well.” He made it a point to say it was a team effort one that, if sustained, could redefine Detroit’s season.
“Look, it all starts with the offensive line,” Campbell said. “They showed up today and delivered for us.” With the line playing at peak performance, the offense transforms from a playoff contender to a legitimate Super Bowl threat. Though left guard Christian Mahogany was unavailable, Kayode Awosika filled the void and played well, opening holes, protecting Goff, and ultimately helping the Lions’ offensive line hold the Commanders to zero sacks.
Quarterback Jared Goff completed 25 of 33 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns, posting his second 300-yard game of the season. His favorite target was wide receiver Jameson Williams, who hauled in six catches for 119 yards and a score, flashing speed and confidence that had been missing in previous weeks. Campbell noted the connection: “We just haven’t connected lately, but we did today … his confidence is up, and he’s just been ripping and roaring.”
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was a force as well. He produced 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, in addition to a receiving touchdown. Gibbs had a chip on his shoulder, as revenge still stung from last year’s loss. Even Campbell noted, “Gibbs was playing with a chip on his shoulder.” He shined and looked like the best Lion on the field with three touchdowns and 172 all-purpose yards.
For Goff, the new play-calling dynamics and offensive efficiency earned his praise. “I thought he did a great job. I really did,” Goff said of Campbell’s direction.
Detroit’s defense also held its own, forcing enough stops to keep Washington in check. Although the Lions did not record any takeaways, they did enough to get the win. Brian Branch stood out as he recorded 1.5 sacks and looked superb. As the Commanders continue to skid — losing five straight after this defeat — the Lions climb to 6-3, while Washington falls to 3-7.
Yet Detroit’s coaching staff won’t be resting on this win. Campbell stressed the importance of carrying this momentum forward. The Lions will now travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles. Sitting at 6-3, Detroit could be alone at the top of the division if the Packers lose to the Eagles on Monday Night Football.
