In recent years there has been a growing concern over social media’s increasingly strict and non transparent censorship policy. That said, most would agree that some form of censorship is needed for the worst forms of content (abuse, threats, illicit activity). The question is: who can be trusted to censor that content without bias and/or manipulation?

BBS solves this problem by having a layered and decentralized system of accountability.

    Layer One - Community Moderation

The rules and guidelines of each BBS are decided by the owner and enforced by the mods of that BBS. This is similar to the way mods moderate content on other social media communities. If a user doesn’t like a community's censorship policy they are free to migrate to another community, more in-line with their preferences.

    Layer Two - Operators

Each BBS is hosted by an operator (cloud provider). Each operator can set its own unique terms of services and content policy. This creates a free market for censorship policy and allows BBS owners to choose which operator they’d like to host their BBS on.

    Layer Three - BBS DAO

The BBS DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) is the governing body of the BBS network. The DAO is controlled by all and any long-term BBS token stakers, they can vote on governance proposals concerning but not limited to: BBS burning policies, product upgrades, bounties, engagement mining program parameters & BBS token allocations as well as deciding if an operator can host BBSes. If an operator is allowing content that is deemed harmful then the BBS DAO can step in and remove that operator from the network or reduce their bounties and/or engagement mining in order to incentivize them to act in accordance with the BBS network policies.

These three layers of accountability achieve censorship in a way that doesn’t allow much power to any one single entity but at the same time can effectively stop extremely harmful content from being posted and propagated.
