The New York Mets were given just a two percent chance to make the World Series in a recent article from ESPN.

With the Mets currently sitting in the National League’s final Wild Card position, their playoff hopes are not yet secure. New York has 17 games left in the 2025 season, holding their playoff spot by a lead of just two games over the San Francisco Giants.

ESPN’s Analytics gives the Mets a 76 percent chance to play October baseball compared to just 12 percent for the Giants.

The article also contains the likelihood of each team advancing to certain rounds of the playoffs. New York was given just a 25 percent chance of making the National League Divisional Series, the lowest percentage among the National League’s top six teams.

It gets even more bleak for Mets fans from there, given just a 10 percent chance to make the NL Championship Series and 2 percent odds to win the World Series, the lowest of any current playoff club.

The Mets have been struggling since the season reached the summer months. Since June 13, they have the fourth-worst record in baseball with a record of 31-45.

New York has lost seven of its last 10 games and four in a row. If the club wants to play postseason baseball, they have to turn things around immediately.

"Yeah. Look, we've been pretty inconsistent. And we put ourselves in this position, which, we're still right there, obviously," Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza said after Monday night’s loss. "The goal is to win the division. But, like you mentioned, we're eight [games] back now, I guess that's what it is. But we've got to get ready for another game tomorrow, and continue to get the job done. But overall, the inconsistency, and here we are in this position."

The team finishes a four-game series against rival NL East division leaders, the Philadelphia Phillies, on Thursday. New York lost the first two games. Three of their remaining five series are against playoff-level teams in the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, and Chicago Cubs.

ESPN’s odds for the Mets aren’t promising, but their play hasn’t been either. The team looks as if they aren’t a threat in the postseason if they manage to squeeze in. The time is now for New York to catch some steam and look like a playoff team.
