The Interview: Choose Your Own Adventure

Brock Pierce on why an undirected and unexamined life is ripe for manipulation.

Technologist and entrepreneur Brock Pierce believes American society requires a course correction. The Bitcoin Foundation chairman, who is currently running for public office in Vermont, advocates for a new paradigm to overcome today’s polarization and the growing gulf between the public and its political institutions. He sat down with Roundtable's Rob Nelson to discuss his ideas for constructive disruption in technology, politics and the media. In this segment, Pierce discusses the importance of discovering purpose and civic participation.

Pierce notes that it’s easy to fall into unconscious patterns of living life without intention.

“Most people in this game of life are playing for self-interest. They're playing to accumulate points, money, possessions, things that are fun for a moment,” he says. “I went into the options menu of life, and I chose to play the non-default game. I play the game of impact. I measure my success in life by the impact I have on the world around me.”

Cementing one’s own purpose and values, he argues, can prevent manipulation by exterior forces, be it the media or political interests.

“These are good questions to ask yourself, like what is your purpose? What are you here to do? You can play the selfish game. You can play whatever game you want. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure sort of game,” he says. “The moment you, you have answers to these questions, you have a real foundation. No one can manipulate you when you know what you're here for.”
