The Roundtable: Will This Bear Hibernate?

Thinking about the markets during a downtrend and uncertain macro conditions.

A panel of experts joined Roundtable to discuss the current state of the financial markets. In this segment, they discuss how long the current bear market will continue—and whether average Americans are prepared for more pain. 

Marc LoPresti notes that mid-August's bump should be seen in the context of longer-term trends and likely developments signaled by the Fed. 

"Whether or not we're experiencing a bear market rally, or a true end of the bear market," will depend on a number of factors, he says, noting that investors are right to "grow more concerned about a hawkish tone from the Fed."

What seems certain is a continued rise in consumer debt.

"The question always is, 'What's priced in?" he adds. "The American consumer does not factor in anticipated price increases that are either driven through inflationary factors or commodity prices." 

"The American consumer, when there's less money in the bank, just takes out that plastic and puts more on their credit card."
