Emeka Egbuka is lighting up the NFL in his first season. He has struck up an unbelievable connection with quarterback Baker Mayfield, and he is, without exaggeration, a top-10 wide receiver in the league.
However, there was a "sliding doors" moment when Egbuka got to Ohio State, where he went all in on football and gave up on his dreams of being a baseball player.
Ohio State: The Buckeyes Took Care of Business Against Minnesota, Set Sights on Illinois
The Ohio State Buckeyes set their sights on the Illinois Fighting Illini. Illinois is trying to wash the bad taste out of its mouth from the beatdown it took...
Egbuka was a guest on The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday and revealed to Pat and his crew that he could have played baseball at Ohio State.
"It was less of a decision and more of just baseball finding a way out of my life... I could have played baseball at Ohio State. I had the opportunity, I talked to the baseball coach and everything. Once I got there, I got a grasp of the football schedule and was like, 'You know what, I'm going to stick to one sport.'"-
Egbuka made the right decision to stick with football. In his four years playing, he eclipsed 1,000 yards twice and had 10 touchdowns in both of those seasons.
Fast forward to the NFL, and Egbuka has taken the NFL by storm.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him at No. 19 in this past year's draft, and the fit could not have been better. He went to a team whose offense constantly has the pedal down and tries to score points at will. Mayfield plays with an incredible chip on his shoulder, while Egbuka is in a wideout room with a future Hall of Famer in Mike Evans.
Getting a perfect opportunity is one thing; taking advantage of it is completely different. The Bucs started the year with Chris Godwin on injured reserve, and Evans soon followed him. Egbuka was quickly elevated to Mayfield's primary option, and he has yet to disappoint.
Through five games, the rookie has 25 catches for 455 yards and five touchdowns. Egbuka's yard production ranks fourth in the NFL, and he is tied for second-most individual scores in the league.
While he is dominating the NFL, it is fascinating to think about what he would look like patrolling center field for some MLB ballclub. He had the skills to make it happen.
But, wise minds prevailed, and Egbuka made the correct choice to focus on his skills on the gridiron. It's a decision that, so far, has paid off very well for the budding superstar.
