Ohio State Buckeyes coach Ryan Day has sent a rather stern message to one of his former players.

Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day has certainly had the pleasure of coaching a lot of great players, and perhaps one of the most dynamic talents he ever had was wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Smith-Njigba spent three years at Ohio State between 2020 and 2022, with his breakout campaign coming in 2021 when he hauled in 95 receptions for 1,606 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 16.9 yards per catch. Those numbers would even make Jeremiah Smith jealous.

A hamstring injury limited Smith-Njigba to just three games during his final season in Columbus, but that did not stop the Seattle Seahawks from selecting him with the 20th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. And now, the Seahawks are reaping the benefits.

Smith-Njigba has turned into one of the league's best receivers and leads the NFL with 839 receiving yards this season, having reached the end zone four times while averaging 16.4 yards per grab.

But recently, the 23-year-old was penalized for dunking the football through the goal posts following a touchdown, and Day sent a playful — but stern — message to his former star during an interview with Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

"The only thing I'll say is, as much as you like to dunk, we have to show a little discipline and a little bit of poise and act like we've been there before," Day said. "As cool as that was — my son was like, 'that was really cool' — we have to show some discipline. There's a lot of things we can do that are cool after a touchdown."

Smith-Njigba was also fined for the incident, so as Pelissero noted, Smith-Njigba now definitely has reason not do to that again.

The Nacogdoches, Tx. native got off to a solid start upon entering the pros in 2023, catching 63 passes for 628 yards and four scores. He then hauled in 100 receptions for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns last year en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.

Smith-Njigba is well on his way to another 1,000-yard campaign and a second straight trip to the Pro Bowl this year, too.

Meanwhile, Day's Buckeyes are 7-0 and are the No. 1 -ranked team in the nation as they attempt to defend their national title. Ohio State has a bye this weekend, but will face Penn State on Nov. 1.
