On paper, the Pittsburgh Pirates seem pretty set in the rotation. However, offensively speaking and in the bullpen, there's a lot of work that has to be done.

The Pirates' bullpen wasn’t the worst in Major League Baseball a year ago, but with some money to spend, especially if the front office wants to finally try to compete for an NL Central title, there should be some names out there on the bullpen front that make a lot of sense for Pittsburgh.

When examining potential options, I loved one that Griffin Floyd brought up, naming New York Yankees free agent Luke Weaver as an option.

“The Pirates’ bullpen could use a facelift after blowing 26 saves last season, the ninth-worst mark in Major League Baseball. That statistic doesn’t show the full picture either, as star closer David Bednar carried the team through much of the first four months of the season. Now that he’s on the Yankees, Pittsburgh’s prospects look even bleaker.

“Enter bullpen arm Luke Weaver, who pitched to a 3.62 ERA with 72 strikeouts over 64.2 innings last season. Weaver isn’t a world beater, but he managed to settle into a respectable role with the Yankees after struggling mightily during the first few years of his career,” he wrote.

Throughout Weaver's career, he's served mainly as a reliever, but he also has the ability to start games.

I'm not suggesting that he should do that in Pittsburgh, considering how young and talented some of the rotation is, but if he's needed for a spot start or as an opener here and there, there's also some flexibility there.

It remains uncertain if he’d want to play for a non-contending team at the moment, but he could be intrigued by money. I'd be rather shocked if the Pirates were the team that offers him the most money around the league, but we've also seen crazier things happen.

Weaver shouldn't be too expensive, either, unless the reports indicating that he really wants to be a starting pitcher are 100% true, and he plans on going into free agency searching for a deal as a starter.
