A confirmed outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) has been traced to horses that were at the recent WPRA Finals in Waco, Texas. According to Outlaw Equine Hospital and Rehab Center, this strain appears to be highly aggressive, rapidly spreading, and has already been reported as fatal in some cases. This is a very serious matter, prompting immediate action from clinics and horse owners statewide.

EHV-1 is a contagious viral disease that spreads quickly through barns, trailers, and event grounds. It can cause fever, respiratory symptoms, neurologic complications, and, in severe cases, death. Once exposed, horses may deteriorate rapidly, making early monitoring and strict biosecurity critical.

Outlaw Equine has activated strict emergency protocols. They are urging all horse owners, especially anyone whose horse was at the WPRA Finals or any large event in the last 14 days, to take temperatures twice daily and watch for fever, nasal discharge, cough, or any stumbling or neurologic symptoms. A temperature of 101.5°F or higher should be treated as a serious warning.

Veterinarians are emphasizing that strict biosecurity is critical,no shared buckets, tack, or equipment, along with thorough hygiene for anyone handling multiple horses. If you can keep your horses at home, it is recommended to do so.

Several upcoming events across the state of Texas have already started adjusting their plans in response to the outbreak. Some producers have chosen to cancel or postpone out of caution, while others are actively making the decision whether to move forward based on veterinary guidance and rising case reports. Many facilities are also tightening entry rules, requiring temperature checks and recent health papers before allowing horses on the grounds.

This is a very new and developing situation, and more updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
