The New Orleans Saints are officially making the change at the quarterback position.
According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, head coach Kellen Moore has elected to start rookie quarterback Tyler Shough over second-year signal-caller Spencer Rattler moving forward. Moore informed both players of the decision on Tuesday morning.
Rattler was thrown into the starting spot as a rookie last year following a season-ending injury to then-quarterback Derek Carr. While he struggled to end a disappointing season, the situation -- and the fact that many of the team's top weapons were also out with injuries -- seemed to give him some grace.
The franchise shocked many by selecting Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, as the signal-caller was near the bottom of the pack when it came to the draft's loaded quarterback class. However, Shough held his own on the practice field.
Following an intense battle through the summer and into the preseason, the Saints elected to ride with Rattler over Shough heading into the 2025 regular season. Given that the veteran was more experienced and would have all of his weapons back, this seemed like the right choice.
Rattler started in the Black and Gold's first eight games of the season. Although he had some flashes of greatness, his struggles far outweighed any success he had. Rattler has thrown for 1,586 yards so far this season while completing roughly 68-percent of his passes. He's recorded eight touchdowns to five interceptions, although four of those picks have come in the past two games alone. Additionally, Rattler has ran the ball for 167 yards through eight games, but he's fumbled four times.
These numbers bring Rattler's career totals to 2,903 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 picks. He's played in 15 games with 14 starts, amassing a 1-13 record as the leading quarterback -- that's one of the worst records to start a career as a quarterback in NFL history.
Shough was subbed into Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers late in the third quarter. He looked solid stepping in as signal caller for New Orleans, completing 17-of-30 passes for 128 yards, no touchdowns and one interception that came as a pass was snagged out of the hands of wide receiver Chris Olave.
Sunday's game against the Rams will mark Shough's first-ever NFL start, and his first time appearing in a game when the team is not already losing by multiple touchdowns. At this point, it's unclear if Shough can give the Saints the spark they need, but as the team continues its downward spiral, it's worth a shot.
