The New Orleans Saints are officially turning towards a new quarterback in Sunday's impending game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Head coach Kellen Moore has elected to start rookie Tyler Shough in place of Spencer Rattler, and he informed both players of the decision on Tuesday morning. It's a change that many were likely expecting, given the fact that Shough was subbed into the Black and Gold's most recent loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers late in the third quarter.
In all honesty, the move comes far too late for New Orleans. If Shough was going to be named the starter at any point, it needed to happen three or four games ago. Moore based his decision on the fact that the offense needs a spark, but how could he not realize that was the case after a few lackluster performances to start the season?
This isn't a shot at Rattler and what he's done with a sluggish offense, but when a team has just 17 chances to win games and put together a record that earns a spot in the playoffs, there's no time to waste. Every game matters; this isn't the NBA or the MLB, where teams can afford to drop some games here or there as they "figure things out."
It was evident weeks ago that the offense simply wasn't working with Rattler. While he wasn't always a problem, he never really performed in a way that showed he could be a game-changer, either. Yet, New Orleans got nearly halfway through the season and wasted far too much time before realizing that something had to change -- even if Shough isn't the solution that the franchise needs.
Moore has been adamant that he doesn't like to rotate between quarterbacks, but unfortunately, that's just the situation that he's in right now. If he had thrown Shough out there as a starter before things slipped too far out of hand, then maybe there would be some clearer answers for the franchise as to how the Saints could have a fighting chance to make a postseason appearance. Maybe Shough could've been the guy to get a few key wins when needed. Maybe Rattler would've been motivated by the adversity, and could've come back stronger. We'll never know.
At this point, Rattler could very well ride the bench for the rest of the year, and Shough could look just about the same on offense. The season could end in about two months from now, with both quarterbacks absolutely dejected and obviously not QB1 material, and the Black and Gold will be no closer to a solution than they were at this point last year. More delayed decision making, more hesitation when it comes to making a much-needed move... and the cycle will just continue.
For the sake of the support of his fanbase and the security of his job, Moore can't continue to be slow to face the obvious. The Saints need to aggressively pursue a solution, no matter what that is, and use the mistakes made this year as a learning experience.
