Chicago Cubs fans couldn't have asked for a better start to Wednesday night's playoff game with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs scored four runs in the first inning.
And it's safe to assume that the vast majority of Cubs fans muttered the same thing when the inning ended. "Four runs won't be enough.''
So they sat on the edge of their seats for the next two-plus hours, either inside the ballpark at Wrigley Field, or at home or the local bar.
They were right about one thing. The Cubs never would score again. But here's the good news. The four runs WERE enough. The Cubs won 4-3 in Game 3 of the National League Division Series, keeping their season alive. Game 4 is Thursday night, where everyone will get to stress together all over again.
The Brewers made it 4-2 in the fourth inning, and then 4-3 in the seventh. They loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but Brad Keller struck out Jake Bauers and then got the final three outs for the win. To read the complete game story from Cubs Roundtable publisher Sam Phalen, CLICK HERE
The Cubs are turning to lefty Matthew Boyd to start Game 4. He was very good most of the season, though he struggled down the stretch and then got lit up in the first inning of Game 1. That was bad news, but the good news for Thursday night was that he only threw 30 pitches last Saturday. So he's going on full rest at least.
Sam Phalen has a great breakdown on Boyd, and manager Craig Counsell's pitching decisions. To read the full story, CLICK HERE
