The Los Angeles Angels were blown out by the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, 11-2. It marked the fourth straight loss for the Angels and their eighth loss in the last 11 games, so things have not been good for the Halos.
The Mariners scored all 11 runs by the time the fifth inning started, including a six-run fourth inning as veteran Kyle Hendricks went just 3.1 innings and gave up nine runs on 10 hits.
As such, the Angels dropped to 69-81 on the year, a game below the Athletics as the Angels are in last place in the American League West.
And, unsurprisingly, but officially, the playoff chase is over, per Sam Blum of The Athletic.
"The Angels were officially eliminated from playoff contention today. It's been 11 years since they made the playoffs — the longest drought in MLB, and third-longest drought in major North American sports. They operate the same way every year, and get the same results."
As Blum notes, it is now the longest drought in the MLB, which is not what Angels fans want to hear.
The Angels won 11 games in August and have just five wins so far in the month of September, so things have been frustrating for the franchise and the fan base.
To make things worse, Blum laid out some more concerning statistics after Sunday's loss, which includes first baseman Logan Davidson being the sixth position player to be used as a pitcher for the Angels this season. That's never a good sign.
Yes, things have not gone well for the Angels, and this being the 10th straight year without a winning record should be a massive red flag.
On top of that, the Angels had Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout together for years, and they still have Trout on the roster.
Ironically enough, the Angels were eliminated from playoff contention in 2023 on September 13, and they were knocked out of contention last year on September 10, so the timing is eerily similar.
At this rate, changes have to be made, and going a decade without a trip to the playoffs is not promising.
The Angels face the Milwaukee Brewers and Colorado Rockies on the road before returning home to end the year against the Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros, but times are not good in Anaheim.
