Los Angeles Angels closer Kenley Jansen will not be traveling with the team to Colorado due to his heart condition, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reported on Thursday afternoon.
The 37-year-old has atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the upper chambers of the heart beat rapidly and irregularly. Jansen has documented his troubles with the condition when he traveled to Denver in the past.
Because of his prior health issues while playing in the Mile-High City of Denver, Jansen has decided not to travel to Colorado with the Angels tonight. Jansen said he is being cautious and doesn’t want to take any risks since the Halos have already been eliminated from the postseason.
“Too many times, stuff happened over there with me," Jansen once told reporters while he was with the Boston Red Sox. “[The 2022 season] was the last time I went there [with the Braves], and when I went back to Atlanta, I started having issues. Then, after a couple of weeks, I went back to afib.”
Jansen signed a one-year, $10 million contract with Los Angeles in the offseason. The 16-year veteran has been a crucial piece of the Angels’ bullpen during 2025, posting a 2.73 ERA and recording 27 saves.
According to Angels’ reporter Erica Weston, Jansen is scheduled to pitch at some point during tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
While he won’t be present to take on the Colorado Rockies in the coming days, Jansen erring on the side of caution is undoubtedly the right move, especially with the Angels already eliminated from the playoffs.
