The Toronto Blue Jays were beaten in heartbreaking fashion in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Friday night, losing 6-2 against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
As a result, the Jays are now one loss away from elimination while the Mariners are one win away from the World Series.
Despite the gut-wrenching loss, the Jays did provide some solid news after the game on outfielder/designated hitter George Springer, who left the game with a knee injury in the top of the seventh inning.
Manager John Schneider said that Springer's X-rays came back negative. He was hit on that right knee by a Bryan Woo fastball, which caused him to hobble around for a few minutes. He tried to stay in the game, but was unable to do so. It's unclear if he'll be able to play in Sunday's Game 6, but this diagnosis gives him a much better chance to try.
Toronto is already without Bo Bichette (knee) and Anthony Santander (back), rendering the lineup not quite as good as it could be. Even without them, the Jays lineup has been solid in this series, but a compromised Springer could become a real problem. They scored 21 runs combined in Games 3 and 4 (both wins).
Springer has had an excellent series, hitting three doubles and two home runs. He's hitting .256 for the playoffs as a whole, and he's a known big-game player. Springer was MVP of the 2017 World Series, which was won by his Houston Astros against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Brendon Little surrendered a game-tying home run to Cal Raleigh. Then, Little walked the next two hitters before being replaced by Seranthony Dominguez. He hit Randy Arozarena, which loaded the bases with nobody out for Eugenio Suarez, who hit a grand slam to give Seattle the 6-2 lead.
M's closer Andres Munoz shut the door in the ninth inning.
The series will shift back to Toronto for the second time. The Jays have yet to beat the Mariners at Rogers Centre in this series, and they are 1-4 against them there this season.
First pitch is set for 8:03 p.m. ET as Trey Yesavage makes his second start of the series against (likely) Logan Gilbert. Assuming it happens, it's a rematch of Game 2, which was won by Seattle.
