The right-hander, who was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft in 2024, made quite the impression on Monday night in his major league debut against the Tampa Bay Rays, capping off a historic rise to the major leagues.

Toronto Blue Jays rookie Trey Yesavage made quite the first impression on Monday night, throwing five dominant innings against the Tampa Bay Rays at Steinbrenner Field.

A first-round pick of the Jays in 2024 out of East Carolina, Yesavage struck out nine batters against just one run allowed.

It looks as if Yesavage is going to be part of the Toronto postseason plans, although it's unclear in what role. Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer and Jose Berrios are all capable starters, making it a tough decision for manager John Schneider.

    A meteoric rise

Yesavage didn't pitch at all professionally after getting drafted, so this is his first pro season. It began in Single-A, and he's risen fast through the ranks, joining a very select group of players who has played at Single-A, High-A, Double-A and Triple-A in the same season before joining the majors that same year.

Since 2005, only Dylan Smith (Tigers), Edgardo Henriquez (Dodgers), Orion Kerking (Phillies), Spencer Strider (Braves), AJ Minter (Braves), Kendall Graveman (Blue Jays), Addison Reed (White Sox), Dan Runzler (Giants) and Daniel Hudson (White Sox) have done it.

Ranked as the No. 25 prospect in baseball, Yesavage went 5-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 25 games in the minor leagues. He struck out 160 batters across just 98 innings.

With Bassitt a free agent after the season, Yesavage figures to be in the mix for a rotation spot right away in 2026, but for now, he'll try to help the Jays win their first World Series since 1993. Toronto enters play on Thursday at 89-63 and six games up on the New York Yankees in the American League East.

They are working toward getting the No. 1 seed in the looming playoffs, which comes with homefield advantage throughout.

They will take on the Rays again on Thursday afternoon.
