The Atlanta Braves have had a strong offseason for the most part, but they still may look to further strengthen the roster. Bringing in a veteran starter to complement the rotation would not be a bad idea. During a recent episode of the Hammer Territory Podcast, Scott Coleman suggested that the team could sign veteran right-handed pitcher Chris Bassitt.
"My guess would be Chris Bassitt," Coleman said.
He went on to say that Bassitt seems like a more realistic candidate for Atlanta since other free agent starters, such as Framber Valdez, Ranger Suarez and Zac Gallen, will command higher salaries.
"So, I think Chris Bassitt, probably not going to be someone who you lose your mind over the Braves signing, but a very capable fourth starter in this rotation," Coleman added. "He would absolutely make the Braves a better team."
Bassitt, 36, most recently pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays. While he did not quite pitch like he once did back when he was an All-Star in 2021, Bassitt still turned in a 3.96 ERA across 31 starts.
He would be a reliable option in the back of the Braves' rotation. Durability is crucial for pitchers, and Bassitt has made at least 30 starts in each of the past four seasons. Between his ability to stay on the field and overall veteran prowess, Bassitt does make sense as a free agency target for this Braves ball club.
As Coleman mentioned, Bassitt will not be a guy fans lose their minds over. He is not a superstar and he is in his mid-30's, meaning decline could come to fruition in the near-future for Bassitt. Regardless, he is not expected to command as much money as the aforementioned starters. With Bassitt, you know what you are going to get. He is going to make a respectable amount of starts, bounce back from his bad outings, and strike out some batters along the way.
If the Braves struggle once again in 2026, Atlanta could move him at the deadline for prospects. If the team finds success, perhaps Bassitt will play a pivotal role in their journey to the postseason.
Either way, the idea of signing Chris Bassitt is one that should not be ignored. It will be intriguing to see if Bassitt becomes a realistic free agency option for Atlanta ahead of MLB spring training.
