New York Mets reliever Reed Garrett is heading back to the injured list, ending his 2025 season, the team announced on Thursday.
Garrett had only recently made his return to a Mets bullpen that desperately needed his services. The right-hander was placed on the 15-day IL at the end of August for inflammation in his throwing arm, making his return on September 7 against the Cincinnati Reds. He appeared in three more games for New York, with his most recent outing coming against the Texas Rangers on Sunday.
Now, Garrett heads back to the IL with a right elbow sprain.
“Same thing he was dealing with on the elbow when he went to the IL not too long ago,” Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters. “He continues to have a hard time recovering after every time he pitches. And then last night, we got him hot. As he was getting loose in the bullpen, he shut it down.”
Mendoza was then asked if the injury could be Tommy John-related.
“It’s hard to say,” he responded. “We gotta wait until the imaging is there, but it’s concerning. It’s concerning for the second time in less than a month [that] a guy is going down with an elbow issue.”
It is certainly concerning for Garrett to have two elbow injuries on his throwing arm in just a few weeks, but the severity is still unknown as of Thursday morning. Results from further testing and imaging should be made public soon.
The Mets also made a slew of other roster moves on Thursday. Right-handed pitcher Dom Hamel has been designated for assignment after debuting against the San Diego Padres last night. He threw one scoreless inning, allowing three hits.
Left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea was placed on the paternity leave list. He was recently moved to the bullpen after struggling as a starter in recent months.
To replace Garrett, Hamel, and Manaea, New York has selected the contracts of three players from its Triple-A affiliate, the Syracuse Mets. Right-handed pitchers Wander Suero, Huascar Brazoban, and Chris Devenski have all been called to the Mets’ major league roster on Thursday.
New York will need all the help it can get from these three newly promoted hurlers, as their rotation and bullpen continue to fall apart as the season’s end comes closer and closer. Their first test may come this afternoon as the Mets finish a three-game series with the San Diego Padres at 1:05 p.m. EST.
