Could a Yankees slugger ignite the Padres' dormant power? One trade proposal suggests this highly-touted prospect could be the answer.

In a recent article pitching trades for this upcoming offseason, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer proposed a move that would help bring some much-needed power into the San Diego Padres lineup.

The proposed trade would bring New York Yankees outfield prospect Spencer Jones to San Diego for right-handed reliever Jeremiah Estrada.

After a 2025 season split between AA and AAA, Jones’ stock has risen once again. He smashed 35 home runs and drove in 80 runs, and his slash line read as .274/.362/.571 with an OPS of .933. With the resurgence in Jones’ value, the Yankees may be more inclined to pull the trigger on a trade now more than ever.

Jones is New York’s No. 4 prospect, but despite his huge 6’7” frame, there are still concerns about the 24-year-old. Jones has maintained a strikeout rate in the mid-30s the past few seasons, potentially making the Yankees more inclined to trade him now for a proven MLB guy.

From the Padres' side, the risk could be very well worth it. San Diego’s lineup hit just 152 home runs in 2025, the third fewest in baseball. The addition of Jones in San Diego’s outfield would provide the power that is currently missing.

Giving up Estrada would be a big loss to San Diego’s bullpen, but it’s an area they could afford to lose a little talent from. They still have the arms of Mason Miller, Jason Adam, Adrian Morejon, and Wandy Peralta in their bullpen, just to name a few. Even without Estrada, who was the Padres’ most-used arm from relief last season, they’d still possess one of the deadliest bullpens in baseball.

It may be hard to convince fans of the move, considering the main glaring issue with the current roster is the starting rotation. If general manager A.J. Preller were to move somebody of Estrada’s talent, it’d potentially be more useful to get a starter in return. As of now, San Diego has just Nick Pivetta, Randy Vasquez, and Joe Musgrove (who’s returning from Tommy John surgery) as reliable options in the rotation. With news that Yu Darvish will miss 2026, they need two or three starting pitchers that can be counted on as the Padres look to make a deeper push in the postseason next season.

Maybe it isn’t Jones that the Padres would prioritize, and perhaps the Yankees are still unwilling to trade him, but Jones would provide a good fit for the problem with the Padres' current lineup.
