Reports have indicated over the past few days that the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to move on from Nick Castellanos.
There should be teams that have an interest in Castellanos, despite not playing as well as he should have over the past few years.
When the Phillies acquired Castellanos, the hope was for him to be one of the top power hitters in baseball, like he had been for some of his career.
Unfortunately, the move from Great American Ballpark to Citizens Bank Park didn't pan out as well as most expected.
It's also tough to say that many teams will love the idea of Castellanos because of how old he is, but he only has one year remaining on his deal.
At the very least, the Phillies should find a way to move on from him, even if they have to attach a prospect in a deal.
When examining some potential landing spots, Curt Bishop of SI named the Detroit Tigers as a suitor, and they might make more sense than any team in baseball.
“The Tigers are another team that could use a little more power in their lineup. They also are one of Castellanos' former teams. He came up through their system in 2013 and was in Detroit until being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 2019. In 2014, he was eighth in the American League Rookie of the Year race and helped the Tigers won 90 games and an AL Central title. He finally unlocked his power in the latter years in Detroit before joining the Cubs.
“The Tigers have Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene penciled in as their everyday outfielders, but they could use one more outfielder to balance things out. Perhaps returning to Detroit, where the Tigers are expected to be a contender, could give Castellanos a little bit of a boost before he hits free agency,” he wrote.
The Tigers have long been searching for a right-handed hitter who can fit in the middle of their lineup.
Simply, Castellanos should be that type of player.
The Tigers also have one of the best farm systems in baseball, and I'm not saying that they'll move on from someone elite to get Castellanos, but they might be able to get something in return that could make sense for them in the future.
