The Pittsburgh Pirates are being predicted to make a rather surprising offseason move.

The Pittsburgh Pirates definitely need some bats heading into the offseason, but whether or not they will actually spend the money to acquire them is another story.

The Pirates are known to be a frugal organization, currently ranking 23rd in the MLB in payroll (and to be honest, it's surprising that they actually rank that high). So fans surely aren't holding their breath when it comes to Pittsburgh making any noise in free agency.

However, Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter is actually predicting the Bucs to make a fairly big signing in free agency: third baseman Yoan Moncada.

A former top prospect, Moncada has not exactly lived up to expectations since coming over from Cuba, but he is still a serviceable hitter, even if his defense has fallen off a cliff.

The 30-year-old has spent 2025 with the Los Angeles Angels, slashing .239/.337/.459 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI over 252 plate appearances. He has missed considerable time due to injuries this season, having played in just 72 games. That has unfortunately been the case for Moncada since 2023, appearing in only 176 contests the past three campaigns.

That could make Moncada pretty affordable on the open market, and the Pirates may be able to sneak in and sign him to a one-year contract.

Moncada owns a lifetime .253/.332/.427 slash line, with his best season coming with the Chicago White Sox in 2019 when he registered a .915 OPS, smashing 25 homers to go along with 79 RBI.

While Moncada has never come close to matching that production since, he has put together quite a few solid seasons, certainly enough for him to comprise an upgrade for a Pittsburgh squad that is in desperate need of some pop.

Not a single Pirates player has even hit 20 home runs this year, with Oneil Cruz leading the way with 19. Bryan Reynolds (15) and Andrew McCutchen (13) are the only other two Pittsburgh sluggers to post double figures in that department.

The Pirates have made just three playoff appearances since 1993, with all of them coming in three consecutive campaigns between 2013 and 2015.
