There are multiple ways for the Pittsburgh Pirates to improve heading into the offseason. The one area in particular that makes a lot of sense for Pittsburgh to get better at is the catcher position.
Joey Bart, Henry Davis, and others haven't done the job for Pittsburgh over the past year or so.
Bart is an interesting name out of the bunch, given that he's somewhat of a veteran now at 29 years old and has been around the league for quite a bit.
Throughout much of his career, he hasn't exactly been perfect, but he's not a bad player by any means, and he might be able to help out at a contending team around the league.
When examining potential areas for the Philadelphia Phillies to improve, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com identified the catcher position as one that Philadelphia needs to address.
He had noted that Bart could be someone who makes sense in Philadelphia, but added the fact that he's never started more than 80 games in a season at catcher.
Bart can play a few different positions, which would offer Philadelphia some flexibility, but he might not be a full-time catcher at this point in his career.
“Joey Bart (29, 2.6). Pittsburgh got calls about Bart in July. He has two years of team control remaining, but he has a career .690 OPS and 93 OPS+. Bart has never started more than 80 games in a season at catcher,” he wrote.
It's also important to note that, as of now, he's the only one on the 40-man roster who has to have a decision made on him regarding the catchers on the roster.
It's possible that Bart could be non-tendered, which is another factor the Pirates will have to consider.
“At catcher, the Pirates currently have four on the 40-man roster. Bart is the only one the Pirates have to make a decision on, as he’s entering his second year of arbitration and projected to make around $2.7 million. Seismic change doesn’t seem too likely, especially with larger needs on the roster, but the Pirates are certainly hoping for more out of some combination of Davis, Bart, Flores and Rodriguez in 2026,” Colin Beazley of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote.
If the Pirates want to move on from some of their veteran players throughout the year, I wouldn't hate moving on from Bart.
I think it's better to do so during the offseason before they have a contract decision truly made for him, but we'll see how everything unfolds somewhat soon.
