We continue to talk about some of the free agents the Pittsburgh Pirates could be interested in, but it's also important to remember that the front office could look at this offseason as a way to improve on the trade front, if they want to move on from some prospects.
There are multiple players the Pirates could move on from, as well as many players they could be interested in.
With the obvious need for more offensive help, that's what everything this winter should be focused on. If the Pirates add another arm or two, I wouldn't be mad, but I think the bigger problem with the team moving forward will continue to be on the offensive side of the baseball.
When examining potential options for the Pirates to pursue on the trade front at third base, Danny Demilio of Pittsburgh Baseball Now had an intriguing thought about trading for Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm.
Bohm has been in the middle of trade talks over the past few years, but the Phillies have not made a move on him yet.
“At the trade deadline, the Pirates dealt third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes to the Cincinnati Reds, creating a void on the left side of the infield. With Jared Triolo’s strong finish to the season, he could theoretically man either third base or shortstop for the Pirates until uber-prospect Konnor Griffin is called up for his debut.
“But if the Pirates opt for a trade instead of free agency, the Philadelphia Phillies’ Alec Bohm presents an interesting option,” he wrote.
Bohm is one of the toughest players in baseball to evaluate on a full-time basis. There are times when he looks very good, and others when he looks to just be an average player.
Unfortunately, his pop at the plate is a bit concerning for a third baseman.
While that doesn't mean he wouldn't be an upgrade to what the Pirates currently have, it isn't necessarily the best idea to move on from a decent amount of prospects, if that's what happens to happen, to land him.
In his six-year big league career, Bohm has just 70 home runs in 2,702 at-bats.
