While the Red Sox are working to win the World Series this season, they are going to be making an organizational shift moving forward in an effort to win even more of them.

The Boston Red Sox enter play on Friday night in possession of the second wild card spot in the American League, and with a weekend series against the New York Yankees on deck, Boston is looking at the possibility of owning the top wild card spot by the end of the three-game set.

Furthermore, they still have an outside shot at the American League East, where they trail the Toronto Blue Jays by 3.5 games.

Boston hasn't been to the playoffs since 2021 and hasn't won the World Series since 2018. They seem well positioned to accomplish both of those goals this year, and they are reportedly preparing to make a big organizational decision that can help them accomplish them easier in the future as well.

Per Rob Bradford of WEEI, Boston will prioritize finding a general manager this offseason to work alongside Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow.

    Why?

There's any number of reasons why Breslow could want some help. First and foremost, he may simply find himself stretched too thin to properly handle the day-to-day of a baseball season. Between dealing with transactions, ownership, agents, as well as monitoring player development, Breslow might just need an extra set of hands on some of the finer details of running the club.

Furthermore, remember the reports from earlier this season that said Breslow wasn't very collaborative and easy to work with? Perhaps this is a sign of good faith that he's working on that, or perhaps it's an edict from the organization to get more voices in the room.

Also, perhaps Breslow wants a little more separation from the field, the players and Alex Cora, and installing a GM could help achieve a nice buffer zone.

    Benefits

Really, all of the above, but the main benefit of having a GM is getting those extra voices in the room. More smart people can lead to more smart ideas and more smart decisions.

    Drawbacks

How do Breslow and this new hire work together? If the new hire just an extension of Breslow's thinking, making his impact on the organization even firmer? Or, are they adversarial, creating conflict in an already high-pressure job?

We will only know once we find out who the hire is.

    Up next

The Red Sox and Yankees will play on Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET. Luis Gil pitches for New York against Lucas Giolito.
