The Boston Red Sox enter play on Wednesday at 2.5 games up in the battle for the third and final wild card spot in the American League, and with 11 games to play, they are trying to wrap up their first postseason berth since 2021.
Left-hander Garrett Crochet, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox last offseason, has been a major part of Boston's success this season, going 16-5 with a 2.63 ERA. He made the All-Star Game and will certainly garner Cy Young consideration.
Speaking on Sirius XM Radio this week, Crochet talked about his first year in Boston, saying he's loved playing at Fenway Park and in such a great atmosphere for such great fans.
You can hear his full thoughts in the clip below:
The Red Sox have struggled in the starting rotation for years. While the 2018 World Series team was anchored by Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi and David Price, the rotation had regressed since then. Sale was oft-injured, and Eovaldi left in free agency after 2022. Price was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020.
Since then? The Red Sox had tried to piece the rotation together with reclamation projects like Martin Perez and Garrett Richards, while also developing some internal options like Brayan Bello and Tanner Houck.
Bello has taken a step forward this year, despite injuries to Kutter Crawford and Houck hurting the team, and Lucas Giolito has returned nicely from injury, but the whole thing is held together by Crochet, who has one of the most electric arms in the entire league. He leads Major League Baseball in strikeouts with 240.
Crochet signed a six-year contract extension that begins in 2026, meaning he'll serve as the ace of the team for years to come. Furthermore, he'll also be one of the faces of the franchise alongside outfielder Roman Anthony and Jarren Duran, as long as Duran isn't dealt in the offseason.
The Red Sox have two more games at home against the Athletics before traveling to Tampa for three games with the Rays. They'll then head to Toronto for three games with the Blue Jays before finishing out the season at home against the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers are currently battling for a first-round bye in the playoffs.
