Liam Hendriks, who has pitched in just 14 games this season, was nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award, which is arguably the highest honor in the league.

Congratulations are in order for Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks, who is the team's nomination for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award.

    About the award, from MLB.com:

The Roberto Clemente Award is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

Every year, each MLB Club nominates a player to be considered for the Award in tribute to Clemente's achievements and character. This year's list of nominees features players whose various community and philanthropic activities have focused on important issues such as awareness and fundraising to support those with cancer and other illnesses or special needs, education for young people, natural disaster relief, outreach to underserved children and communities in the United States and abroad, and more.

Hendriks, who is well-regarded as a solid clubhouse factor, is also a cancer survivor who has done work with the Stand Up to Cancer Initiative.

The following comes from the Red Sox about his candidacy for the award.

Liam is again on pace to donate more than $750,000, his annual custom, to charitable causes, focusing his giving on two deeply personal areas: cancer research and treatment, and support for veterans and their families. But for Liam, philanthropy isn’t limited to monetary donations. He actively seeks out ways to amplify the voices of those impacted by these causes -- lending his time, his story and his platform to advance awareness and compassion.

In 2025, Liam has already made 65 community appearances, totaling 51 hours of direct service. Whether visiting patients in local hospitals, spending time with cancer survivors, meeting with military families or volunteering at Red Sox community events, Liam is present and intentional. His involvement goes beyond appearances: He creates space for real connection. He listens. He shares. He gives of himself.

    On the field this year

After missing all of 2024 with Tommy John surgery, Hendriks has only appeared in 14 games this season because of injury. He has struggled when healthy, going 0-2 with a 6.59 ERA and a 1.390 WHIP.

He's struck out 12 batters in 13.2 innings.

    For his career

A 14-year veteran of the Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, Athletics and Red Sox, Hendriks was one of the best relievers in the league from 2019-2023. In that time, he went 21-12 with a 2.32 ERA, saving 115 games and making three All-Star teams.

    As for the Sox

At 82-68, Boston is working to solidify its first playoff berth since 2021. With 12 games left to play, they sit in the second wild card spot in the AL. They'll play the Athletics on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. ET.
