Eddie Romero, who is the assistant general manager of the Red Sox, just interviewed for the top job with the Washington Nationals.

Heading into a key offseason, the Boston Red Sox could be in position to lose a key member of the front office.

Britt Ghiroli of the Athletic reports that assistant general manager Eddie Romero has interviewed with the Washington Nationals for their general manager role. Washington fired previous GM Mike Rizzo in July, right before the MLB Draft. She indicates that Washington wants to make a decision by the end of this season, which is just about a week and a half from now.

    About Romero

Romero has been with the Red Sox since 2006, making this his 20th season with the organization. The following comes from a portion of his Red Sox biography:

Romero started his tenure with the club in February 2006 as an assistant in International and Professional Scouting. He spent four seasons working as the club's Director of International Scouting from 2012-15. He has also worked for the Red Sox as Coordinator and Assistant Director of Latin American operations, and Assistant Director of Latin American Operations/International Scouting.

    About the Red Sox situation

It's unclear as to what Romero's goals are personally, so all we can do is lay out the options in front of him. The Red Sox have also said they are looking to hire a general manager this offseason. Romero would seemingly be a logical choice for that role, but if the Nationals want to hire someone before the Red Sox do, that could complicate things for him. Furthermore, with the Red Sox, it would seem as if Craig Breslow still has ultimate decision-making power. Would Romero welcome that, or would he want to run his own ship and make his own decisions more regularly?

    About the Nationals situation

Washington is barreling toward another last-place finish in the National League East, a regular occurrence since they won the World Series in 2019. Though they play in an excellent division, Washington has real talent and should be able to make noise in the future. MacKenzie Gore, James Wood and C.J. Abrams make up a nice nucleus of players, with Wood looking like one of the true breakout stars in the game.

    Up next

Romero and the Red Sox have 10 games left in the regular season. They enter play on Wednesday at 83-69 and in a tie for the second wild card spot.
