Anthony, currently on the shelf with an oblique issue, is trying to make it back in time for the postseason, should the Red Sox get there.

Speaking on WEEI radio in Boston on Wednesday, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided a small update on outfielder Roman Anthony, who is currently sidelined with an oblique injury.

Cora said that Anthony is able to walk on a treadmill for up to 25 minutes at a time, though he provided no timetable for his return.

The hope has been that Anthony could return for the playoffs, should the Red Sox get there. They enter play on Wednesday in possession of the third and final wild card spot, where they are 2.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians.

    A star impact

Anthony, who was rated as the No. 1 prospect in baseball at the time of his promotion, has certainly lived up to his billing. In 71 games since being promoted in June, Anthony is hitting .292 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs. He also owns a .396 on-base percentage, showcasing great discipline at the plate. His .859 OPS shows his ability to do damage consistently, and he also has 18 doubles in 257 at-bats.

    A big future

Anthony entered the season as one of three Red Sox prospects in the Top 15 of MLB Pipeline's rankings. He pairs with Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell to make up the next core of the Red Sox, and all three have already gotten MLB experience this season.

Anthony signed a nine-year contract extension that comes with a team option for 2034, worth $130.46 million. He'll link with Jarren Duran and Garrett Crochet to serve as the next faces of the Sox.

    Boston's immediate situation

The Red Sox have 11 games remaining to solidify their first playoff berth since 2021. They'll have two games remaining against the A's before traveling to Tampa for three with the Rays and then Toronto for three with the Blue Jays.

They'll end the season at home with three against the Detroit Tigers, who are trying to earn a first-round bye in the playoffs.
